Boston, cobbler, or two-tin: choose the right shaker.

Cocktail Shaker Buying Guide: Boston, Cobbler, or Two-Tin?

For most new home bartenders, a two-piece shaker is the best long-term choice. Boston shakers are quick, durable, and easy to clean, though they require a separate strainer. Cobbler shakers include a built-in strainer and can feel more approachable, but the lid may stick and the small cap can disappear exactly when you need it.

Choose based on your habits. If you want a compact all-in-one tool and make one drink at a time, a cobbler is reasonable. If you entertain or want to practice professional-style technique, choose a Boston or two-tin set with a Hawthorne strainer. Stainless steel is usually more forgiving than glass because it chills quickly and does not break.

The embedded comparison video shows the major styles side by side. Once you choose a shaker, use it with our Old Fashioned guide for a stirred drink and our rosemary spritz for a lighter build.
