Interview with Kate Miller

Interview with Kate Miller

We chatted with Kate Miller, Co-Founder and CEO of Miss Grass – the folks helping you get good at weed. We talked about what it has been like to start and run a company with her business partner Anna Duckworth and how she handles the inevitable ups and downs (hint: hello, cannabis).

Why did you decide to start Miss Grass?

Miss Grass was inspired by my stint working at a medical cannabis dispensary back in 2008. I wanted to create a brand that authentically represented how myself, my girlfriends, and other conscious consumers were integrating cannabis into their lives. Fast forward a decade and many joint sessions later, and Miss Grass was birthed.

How would you describe Miss Grass’ voice and POV?

We believe in the power of this plant, and its ability to make people’s lives better through compassion, inspiration, health and wellness, healing and laughter. We believe in transparency and equipping our community with all the information – on the science, history, culture, and what goes into the products we sell and the brands we support. All this informs the Miss Grass voice, which is compassionate, authentic, inspirational, approachable, with a bit of badassery.

What does a typical day in your life look like?

If I’m not traveling, it starts with me waking up in Venice and snoozing my alarm (guilty). I try to do a quick 20-30 minute flow to move my body in the am. Followed by breakfast at home, and grabbing a matcha on the way to the office. I’m in meetings/calls most of the work day with various members from our team – we’re small, and work collaboratively across departments especially on bigger projects. After work, I’ll grab dinner with my partner, and end the night with a joint. Which is usually followed by a creative workflow where I get a lot of the strategy work done for the business.

Life outside of work:

Family is everything to me. I’m obsessed with traveling and being in nature. A common social night for me is either a dinner with a group of friends or a couch hang with joints.

Why did you start using CBD?

I’ve suffered with psoriasis my whole life, and was recommended I give CBD topicals a try. I now use CBD daily for my psoriasis, for stress management, and in my beauty routine.

What’s the best thing about having a business partner? What’s your favorite memory together?

Ah, my mental state would be much darker without my business partner, Anna. Not a lot of people talk about the entrepreneur's lonely journey, which is especially true in the early days when you’re still figuring a lot of shit out and questioning a ton, including your own ability. It’s been crucial to have Anna, not only for the incredible work she’s contributed to making Miss Grass what it is today, but also as my sounding board, a gut check, a partner for a good joint or cry session–both very important.

One of my favorite memories with Anna was after a video shoot at her home, I hung around to smoke a joint and chat business. We got high and super sentimental. It was a shared moment of gratitude – for each other, for what we’ve accomplished, and felt so confident and excited in what was to come.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned through the process of bringing Miss Grass to life?

There’s so much you don’t know, you don’t know. And knowing who you can turn to and ask during those times are critical.

What or who inspires you?

My mom. She has an incredible career, and couldn’t be a better mother, friend, sister, and aunt. I always knew she crushed it at life, but now being as busy as she is with my career, I truly am astonished at how she manages it all with such grace, love, and patience.

What is something new or interesting that you’re doing for your health or wellness these days?

No phone times. Being more conscious of putting my phone away during meals and other moments so I can be present.

Launching a start-up and a calm, quiet mind usually don’t go hand in hand. What are your go-to tips to handling stress?

Weed.

Mindful tip:

Take a deep breath. Basic, but it works.

Brand you love:

Adidas. Timeless, authentic, constantly reinventing themselves.

Person you admire:

My mama.

Favorite Sweet Reason flavor:

Cucumber Mint

Miss Grass is on a mission to make cannabis accessible by making you smart about weed—the science, the history, the culture, and the products that work best.
